textural studies

There's a spot by the lake that I've been making a point to visit this week.  While the vantage point is the same, the vista rarely is.  The textures alone are phenomenal.

The ice has been moving in and out with the wind, with the current.  As if the lake is breathing.Two_nine_view
Yesterday, open water filled the same spot beyond the knobby point where ice houses had been set out earlier this week.  Tomorrow, it will surely be changed again.  Even once the head of the lake freezes solid, it will continue to be in a state of flux influenced by wind, light and snow.  I know it is this lake that keeps me going through the longest season; the constant reminder that the world is very much alive, even in the dead of winter.

What beautiful scenery. I can see why you are drawn to that spot again and again. I've never seen anything like that - no snow or ice where I live unfortunately.

Beautiful pictures. Must be amazing to see.

I just love texture, and the constant changing in these is amazing.

fascinating and wonderful. thank you, thank you for sharing it! (and what are ice houses, exactly?)

emily, ice houses (maybe they're actually called ice fishing houses) are makeshift shelters that hardy fisherfolk erect above a hole they drill into the ice for fishing. they drop in a line and sit and wait for hungry fish to bite. some are simple canvas tents, others are elaborate wooden structures with - i've heard - generators, heat and even televisions. it's absolute craziness, i tell you. and completely fascinating too!!

Just Gorgeous! Perfectly stated!

these photos make me homesick for michigan winters... ten years ago, i would have bet the farm i never would say that!!

stunning winter images.

Your photos are amazing. My favorite is the first of these three.

Love,
E

I love the first one for ice looking like cut glass and the third for the pink hues in the sky. The second one is nice too and works well a little underexposed to bring out the colour between the white patches...nice work! It brings back my days working in the Canadian Arctic. Frozen feet in frozen mucklucks.

Now that's what I'll be looking for in March, I just hope there's still ice for me to see

Gorgeous!! I grew up on Lake Michigan and I still feel homesick for the great lakes. Stunning photos. Thanks for sharing.

what a beautiful post!
