green week two :: mystery
I can't help but find mystery in Spanish moss. The way it hangs from the oaks, the signposts and even the overhead wires. Thriving without roots. I've heard that it's not a plant, but a parasite. I've heard it doesn't need a root structure. You can tell me these things, point me to texts that will explain. But there are some mysteries that need to just be. And so for me, Spanish moss will remain a rootless wonder. At least for now.

spanish moss really is remarkable. Nature never ceases to amaze me in the ways that plants and animals adapt to survive.

I am right with you. It reminds me of my childhood. The same way the smell of paper mills once reminded me of getting closer to the beach. The day I was told what the scent was it took all the romance out of my daydreams. It was a smell, a stench from that day on. Not a way of counting the minutes to summertime freedom. Seeing the street lined live oaks with spanish moss draping off of them is so beautiful, mysterious looking in itself. Getting the answer is magical, but sometimes the " not knowing " is so much more.

Word from the South: Not a parasite, Spanish Moss is an air plant, thus receiving all of its nutrients and water from the AIR! The only problem it causes for trees is that it can get very heavy after our typical afternoon summer rains. But it is also a flowering plant...yep, little flowers and fuzzy seeds...you guessed it...so they can go airborne!
