Summer and its edible bounty seem to hit the north shore of Lake Superior all at once. The long weekend was all about food -- local food. In four days we experienced the abundance of four family farms.
As with each Friday of the summer, over a dozen boxes of just-picked goodness was delivered to our porch. We host a pick-up site for our CSA. Zuchini, fennel, salad greens, basil, cilantro, cucumber, broccoli, kale, swiss chard, mizuna, sugar snap peas.
On Saturday, Green Pastures Dairy celebrated the opening of their farm store, aptly named the Cheese House. We visited the farm and came home with raw milk, eggs, summer sausage, bacon, and yes, cheese.
Sunday we picked blueberries: nine pounds of fat juicy orbs. Of course, at least another pound was eaten while picking.
And as if our bellies weren't aching enough, we picked over ten pounds of raspberries at another farm on Monday.
With such abundance all around, you'd think I was content being right
here, right now. But I honestly wanted to be many many miles from
here. My sister gave birth this weekend and I would have traded the dairy and the berries for the chance to meet the new addition to our family. When we do get to meet the little one in a few months,
we'll have to bring jam made from berries picked on the weekend he was
born.
